Summary

Interesting in places, but the writing style is quite basic/repetitive at times。 For a work on the speculative futures of industry, Schwab seems to have forgotten to reference sources that have led him to his conclusions - apart from very briefly in the appendix

I consider this book by Professor Schwab to be quite prescient。 Schwab makes a good case for the Fourth Industrial Revolution changing the world drastically。 I must say, some parts of this Revolution sound like inherently good and positive things - however, I believe when implemented, the consequences for humanity will be dire and quite negative。 An example: Schwab speaks about automobiles in the Fourth Industrial Revolution。 He describes how about 40% of the cost of the car will be in the elect I consider this book by Professor Schwab to be quite prescient。 Schwab makes a good case for the Fourth Industrial Revolution changing the world drastically。 I must say, some parts of this Revolution sound like inherently good and positive things - however, I believe when implemented, the consequences for humanity will be dire and quite negative。 An example: Schwab speaks about automobiles in the Fourth Industrial Revolution。 He describes how about 40% of the cost of the car will be in the electronics alone。 If I recall correctly, he also spoke a bit about sensors (this is all in the section "Government")。 This sensor technology, as described in the book, sounds inherently good; you may be compelled to think "How great - I'll be notified when my tires need air!", however, the government can, and I believe they very likely will use such emerging technologies to stifle opposition and take on those deemed enemies of The State。 You pay an exorbitant price for the car and are spied on in return。 With all said, there is much to be learned from this extremely valuable book; read it。EDIT 2。12。22: Section 3。5。2 'Human Connection' confirms my conclusion that 4IR is already in swing, has been since *at least* 2007-8, and that the consequences of 4IR will seriously be quite negative for humanity。 Read this if you want to also understand the collapse of the American Empire。 。。。more

。。。more

Well worth the read and study。 I found the survey report in the appendix of most value as it looked at over 20 technology shifts。 For example, it's noted for AI and decision making that - assuming Moore's law - "CPUs will reach the same level of processing power as the human brain in 2025。" Research that indicates the 4th industrial revolution seems to be creating fewer jobs in new industries, points to the necessity of workers being continuously adaptable, innovative, agile and connected。 Well worth the read and study。 I found the survey report in the appendix of most value as it looked at over 20 technology shifts。 For example, it's noted for AI and decision making that - assuming Moore's law - "CPUs will reach the same level of processing power as the human brain in 2025。" Research that indicates the 4th industrial revolution seems to be creating fewer jobs in new industries, points to the necessity of workers being continuously adaptable, innovative, agile and connected。 。。。more

This book lives in infamy and is inflamed in controversy。 Very rarely throughout history have the elite written so directly to "the masses" about the challenges they see us facing。 Few times before have we had such insight into the thoughts technocrats have on current and future technology。 Klaus Schwab takes the time in this book to articulate the technological developments and disruptions we face that are set to influence and change every aspect of our contemporary life。 Within the book, Schwa This book lives in infamy and is inflamed in controversy。 Very rarely throughout history have the elite written so directly to "the masses" about the challenges they see us facing。 Few times before have we had such insight into the thoughts technocrats have on current and future technology。 Klaus Schwab takes the time in this book to articulate the technological developments and disruptions we face that are set to influence and change every aspect of our contemporary life。 Within the book, Schwab lays out the most groundbreaking technologies and their applications for the consideration of all stakeholders, from future policymakers to community leaders and entrepreneurs。 Klaus Schwab is the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum and an engineer and economist from a family line of wealthy industrialists。 He was educated in industry by his father and went on to attain doctorates and PhDs in engineering and economy。 The WEF is at the forefront of research and policy development when it comes to the development of emerging technologies across the world。 They also hold the Davos meeting in which the elites of the world (from Trump, to Xi Jing Ping, to Mark Zuckerberg) gather to discuss future plans and development。 This makes Schwab an incredibly authentic voice of the global elite。The book first begins by setting the historical context of the "Fourth Industrial Revolution"。 The author uses history as a frame of reference to understand how profound shifts in ways of life have occurred in the past due to changes in technology and social organization。 The author briefly discusses several revolutions of development, from the agrarian revolution to the various industrial revolutions。 Schwab argues that all of these revolutions, while spectacular in their own right, set the stage for today's "Fourth Industrial Revolution"。 Today, this revolution he says is far more spectacular and all-encompassing。 Today's revolution, Schwab argues, is characterized by a "much more ubiquitous and mobile internet, by smaller and more powerful sensors that have become cheaper, and by artificial intelligence and machine learning"。The book goes on to give several examples of the developing fields of technology and their applications and how they will transform our lives。 These technologies, Schwab argues, bring forth the inevitable "Fourth Industrial Revolution"。 Schwab argues that we are undergoing a "technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another。。。 Its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced before。" This change comes about as the technology of this revolution grows at an "exponential rather than linear pace"。 Merging technology breakthroughs in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, 3-D printing, nanotechnology, biotechnology, genetic engineering, materials science, energy storage, and quantum computing, all create an environment in which serious transformation is unavoidable。After setting the context for this "revolution" and then detailing some of the technologies and the possibilities they are opening, Schwab invites us to begin to consider some of the ramifications these emerging technologies will have on work, life, politics and every other aspect of our lives。 These changes open up discussions about not only traditional political economy concerns, such as growth and GDP, but also individual concerns of privacy, individual rights, and even spiritual and ethical concerns like what it means to be human。 While discussing the emergence of genetic engineering, designer babies, and cyborg enhancements, Schwab argues that some of these technologies will potentially blur the line between "machine and human"。 It is clear from the text, that Schwab thinks that this revolution will boldly reshape our consciousness and the way we relate to reality itself。 In the midst of these perplexing circumstances and exponential change, how are we to orient ourselves as individuals, particularly as leaders in our community? How can we maintain a human-centric approach to policy and direct these technologies towards empowering humanity rather than destroying it? These are all concerns that Schwab raises within the book, but fails to address seriously。 For instance, again and again, Schwab mentions how some of the emerging technologies we see, such as machine learning, can possibly majorly empower surveillance, setting the stage for full-scale digital tyranny。 Schwab raises this concern and indicates that this is something we will have to deeply think about while developing this technology。 However, if you expected to hear any possible solutions, or hoped to hear any possible steps the WEF is taking to address privacy concerns (or other concerns), this book is remiss in addressing these topics in depth。 Perhaps his next book, "Shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution" better addresses these concerns, but reading this text alone one is left very disconcerted about the actions that are being done to ensure nightmare scenarios do not take place。Although throughout the novel time and time again Schwab says we must develop a human-centered approach to the adoption of these technologies, the book itself does very little to develop ways we can actually develop this human-centered approach。 Scouting through the WEF's partnership list we can see the various institutions and investors that the WEF is in contact with。 From Bank of America to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to BlackRock, Pfizer, and Meta (Facebook), we see that the WEF is connected with some extremely powerful and influential organizations and institutions。 If Klaus Schwab and the WEF really plan on creating a "human-centric" approach to the adoption of these technologies, and they want to create a "stakeholder" form of capitalism rather than a "shareholder" form, then it is very disconcerting that they remain primarily connected to so many companies and organizations that are responsible for so many of the ills of our society that we see today。 This creates a scenario in which we cannot be sure of the motives or of the sincerity of the WEF in Schwab in actually creating a so-called "human-centric" approach to our technology。 This book is in many ways a gift。 Having such a high standing and affluent man write an accessible book like this in which us simpletons can read and have a better understanding of emerging technologies and their possible ramifications, really opens the door to having a better public discussion on how we as a society and even as individuals can orient ourselves to face the dynamic and exponentially fast 21st century。 If Schwab's goal was to wake us up to the challenges we are facing and make us unsettled enough to get more personally involved in the development and implementation of these technologies, then he achieved his goal hugely。 However, if he was trying to make us more confident or hopeful of the direction we are headed, or if he wanted to give us good ideas about how to actually address these changes, he failed miserably。 Reading this book felt like a major call to action。 I would highly recommend to people who feel moved by this book to do research on the Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan。 McLuhan is a cornerstone of media studies and one of the few people who took the time to actually analyze and write about the effects of media (think the technology we interface with) on our consciousness and body。 And no, not about the content of our media, but the media itself and how the medium is the message (massage)。 I would also encourage people to read in reflection to this The Unabomber Manifesto: Industrial Society and its Future。 It is spooky to see how the Ted Kaczynski prediction and dystopian view of technology are becoming more and more validated even by the technicians themselves。 In this century, it will be up to us all to really define our relationship with technology, and really think about how we can use technology to empower us and benefit humanity, rather than destroy it。 。。。more

An extraordinary book very well researched and grips you across from the beginning till the end。 In fact this is the first text in the last few years I have read, which virtually hijacked me for three hours at a stretch。 I am liberated but thoughtful for the next twenty years on what is in for future。 I wish I had read this before authoring my fourth book “VUCA in startups “ forthcoming late December 2021。 Thx Prof Schwab and honour to read behind the lines。 Impeccable …。

Part of the reason Hitler was able to get away with mass murder is because most of the people that blindly followed him failed to read Mein Kampf。 Most people walk around with their eyes closed to what is happening right in front of them。 Objectively educate yourself and open your eyes。 It’s almost like Klaus Schwab was educated in Mein Kampf as a child and perfected it as an adult。 This won’t end well for humanity。
